Film director Brendan Donovan says his first feature film Hopes and Dreams has attracted a strong cast.

The coming-of-age story about a father called Gazza Snell and his two teenaged sons obsessed with go-karting is being filmed around the east Auckland suburb of Howick.

"All of our actors are fairly prominent names," said Donovan, who also wrote the script. "We've got some stellar people."

The cast includes Australian actor William McInnes, from TV drama Blue Heelers, Robyn Malcolm, of Outrageous Fortune, Mia Blake (No 2 and The Tattooist) and Joel Tobeck (Eagle vs Shark and 30 Days of Night), the Howick and Pakuranga Times reported.

The film was developed and financed by the NZ Film Commission.
