This beer made me chuckle, but does it taste any good? Is it supposed to? Clearly targeting a lads and laughs market, the Wakachangi label is a send-up of some of the beer hyperbole common on bottles these days. There is also quirky YouTube marketing that's been a hit with viewers.
Wakachangi's tag line, "quite nice beer, established circa 1648" is followed by the brewer's description of a "premium non-export effervescent sparkling fizzy lager". This is a "South Otago beer with North Canterbury flavours, brewed by a West Coaster with the ol' misty waters of the Waikato".
As creator Leigh Hart, better known by his TV persona 'That Guy' says, there is barely a true word on the label. Wakachangi is brewed at the Harrington's Brewery in Christchurch, and its name hails from Hart's nickname for the Waikato River.
The taste of the lager was pleasant but not earth-shattering. In fact, it was "quite nice beer" so I can't complain. It is much like Kiwi lad culture - unrefined yet fun.
In the glass Wakachangi was clear and pale with a wisp of head. It was light in body, putting it in the hot- day-quaffer class. There was a pleasant whiff of a traditional lager hop - probably saaz - but with little bitterness, making it a less satisfying drop. The initial aroma was grainy and slightly lemony, although this faded fast.
Let's face it, you could put anything inoffensive in this bottle and with clever marketing and Leigh Hart's profile, the beer would sell. He tells us that Wakachangi topped its class at the 2013 Moon Breweries Best Beer Awards. They don't exist but drink this for what it is, a refreshing and agreeable summer drop.
You can buy Wakachangi beer at Fitzroy Liqourland.
