Police and fire safety officers are investigating an arson attack in the CBD on Thursday night.

Three rubbish bins were set alight in and around King and Queen streets between 10pm and 11pm.

"The fires have been dealt with quickly by firefighters but had the potential to spread to neighbouring properties," fire safety officer Matt Crabtree said.

A similar attack in which a moped scooter and several rubbish bins were set ablaze also took place in the CBD only a week prior.

Senior Sergeant Robbie O'Keefe said one person had been arrested in relation to that attack, but police wanted to hear from anyone with information about the latest fires.

New Plymouth police can be contacted on 7595500, O'Keefe said.
