Firefighters have put out a large fire at New Plymouth's old Barrett St Hospital.
Four crews were sent to the abandoned facilities at about 9.45pm on Sunday night a Fire Service spokesman said.
Within two hours, crews had extinguished the fire, although they remained on site to ensure the blaze was completely out.
No one was hurt in the incident, the spokesman said.
The building was "extensively smoke-logged", so the extent of the damage was not yet known. Investigators would be called in to determine the cause of the fire.
The site has been commonly vandalised since the Ministry of Justice announced last year the facilities were to be demolished.
