Heavy rain is expected to batter Mt Taranaki this afternoon with showers and strong winds due to increase around the region today.
MetService issued a severe weather warning last night predicting rain about the mountain later today.
A front is expected to move to east across the country today and early tomorrow, bringing with it bursts of heavy rain to much of the west coast, MetService said.
In the nine hours from 5pm tonight until 2am tomorrow between 100 and 140mm of rain may fall about the summit of Mt Taranaki, with lesser amounts at lower levels.
The heaviest falls are likely to reach intensities of 15 to 25mm an hour and occur later this evening.
Rain is expected throughout the region later today, with northerly winds strengthening during the day and gusting to 100km an hour in places.
The MetService long-range forecast is predicting rain or showers throughout the region until the middle of next week.
