After nearly 40 years handling the people of Merrilands' money, TSB Bank's branch in the New Plymouth suburb is set to close.
No jobs will be lost as a result of the closure of the branch, which opened in 1975 and will shut on July 25.
The property manager of the Merrilands Shopping Centre, KCL Property, plans to refurbish the building and a medical centre will open in its place.
TSB Bank's chief executive Kevin Murphy said the closure was mainly because fewer customers choose to do their banking at branches. Only about 2 per cent of customers did so, with most using online and electronic options.
Murphy said the decision to close the branch was difficult. "Giving TSB Bank customers a choice of how they do their banking is important.
"For some customers the closing of Merrilands branch will be inconvenient - so it's essential we give them plenty of notice and continue to offer alternative options."
The Bank is looking into putting an ATM in the Merrilands area, and mobile and online banking options are available to customers.
Alternative work locations will be found for staff and the bank has New Plymouth area branches in Fitzroy, Vogeltown, New Plymouth central, Moturoa, Westown and Bell Block.
The news the branch is to close comes on the heels of the closure of a Kiwibank's Waitara branch.
