LATEST: Parts of New Plymouth went dark for about half an hour around midday.
Powerco's faults page reported power was cut to properties in Westown and the central business district about 12:30pm.
About 500 customers on Frankley Rd and Maratahu St were affected after a tree came down on power lines in Frankley Rd.
Strong winds are believed to have caused the tree to fall on lines.
Mr Stevenson said it was a timely reminder for people to have trees that are close to overhead power lines trimmed or felled by Powerco approved contractors.
A secondary fault on Powerco's network then resulted in more cuts in Fulford St, Dawson St, Vivian St and some of St Aubyn St.
Powerco Acting Network Operations Manager Dean Stevenson said the majority of customers had power restored within the hour.
It was expected repairs would be completed around 3pm.
Power was also cut to about 200 people in and around coastal Taranaki following a fault on the Powerco network, the cause of which was being investigated, Mr Stevenson said.
Power was expected to be fully restored by 3.30pm.
