The New Plymouth Airport has reopened after thick fog caused its closure this morning.

Airport manager Kevin Hill said early morning flights on the way to New Plymouth had been turned around and departures had been cancelled.

Many passengers had chosen to drive to Auckland and Wellington, instead of waiting for the fog to lift, he said.

Other passengers had been transferred to later flights.

The fog was not the only thing the airport had had to contend with.

Last night three flights could not land because the taxiway lights and the apron lights had malfunctioned.

Although the lights were fixed by about 10.30pm, the Auckland and Christchurch flights were cancelled, and the Wellington flight landed in Whanganui, with passengers being bused to New Plymouth.

Hill said that because the final three flights did not arrive last night the airport had no planes ready for early-morning departures today.

"But given the fog they couldn't have flown out this morning anyway, so I suppose it was a good night to lose power to the lights," Hill said.
