With a clap and a bang, the wild weather has reared its ugly head again.

A swathe of thunderstorms and heavy showers ripped through Taranaki and Waitomo this evening, and more could be on the way for the Marlborough Sounds, Wellington and the Kapiti Coast, MetService warns.

It has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for these areas through to midnight.

"We've got the risk we could get some very localised, intense rainfalls exceeding 20mm an hour," forecaster Andy Downs said.

"If you get that in an urban area, that can cause surface flooding and make driving hazardous."

More heavy showers and thunderstorms were expected to come racing in from the Tasman Sea tomorrow, affecting western parts of the North Island and possibly Auckland.

These thunderstorms often had the potential to produce small tornadoes along the Taranaki coast, Downs said.

"But today it looks like we dodged a bullet."

Should NPDC sell its Tasman farms?

Yes, and use the money for local projects.

No, the farms are a good long-term investment.

Sell a portion of them.
