Burglars arrested

A suspected burglar has been arrested after trying to sell a stolen laptop at a Taranaki pub.

The 33-year-old man spent the night in police cells and will appear in the New Plymouth District Court on charges of receiving stolen property, Sergeant Bruce Irvine said.

Shifty's Bar and Cafe owner Bruce Candy said a ''suspicious'' looking man came in and tried to sell the laptop to several patrons.

''I have rung 111 and police arrived and arrested the man,'' he said.

Candy said a story in yesterday's Taranaki Daily News about Bell Block resident Ivy Linn being burgled had raised his awareness of the issue.

''I had no hesitation in ringing the cops, we don't need that type around here,'' he said.

Irvine said a large amount of stolen goods had been recovered by police following yesterday's arrest.

''We will be sorting through it and trying to get it back to the owners today,'' he said.

A 21-year-old was also arrested and charged with burglary in Hawera yesterday.

Sergeant Lincoln McCrea said the man would appear in the Hawera District Court on Tuesday.

''Our scene of crimes guys are very good in Taranaki and from their work we've got one arrest and are expecting more to come.''

McCrea said there had been a spate of burglaries in Hawera during the last month, but police were working hard at solving them.

''We are expecting to make more arrests but in the meantime we want the public to be aware and keep their eyes open for anything suspicious.''

''Don't make it easy for these bloody thieves,'' he said.

Meanwhile, Bell Block police are looking to identify the owners of a stolen racing go-cart recovered earlier in the month.

''A member of the public has seen a group of youths covering it up with leaves. It was uncovered in a bush in a Bell Block reserve,'' Constable Andrew Wong Too said.

''We have no reports of it being stolen and we've had it since June 14. If we can identify where it was taken from it might gives us leads as to those involved,'' he said.
