Winter is well and truly here with heavy rain and gales set to batter Taranaki today.
A front over the Tasman Sea is expected to move eastwards across the country, preceded by strong northerlies and heavy rain for western and northern areas, MetService said.
Severe weather warnings are in place and Mt Taranaki is expected to receive 80 to 100mm of rain in the nine hours to 3pm, with 120mm possible about the higher slopes.
Peak rain intensities could reach 15 to 25mm per hour and thunderstorms were possible.
People, especially trampers, were advised that rivers and streams could rise rapidly and slips were possible in vulnerable areas, MetService said.
Northerly gales are also expected in parts of Taranaki today. Those gales could become severe, MetService said.
