Fonterra roof fire

Fire brigades and police have been called to the Fonterra plant in Eltham after reports of a fire in the roof.

Firefighters from around Taranaki were called to a douse a fire in the roof at Eltham's Fonterra plant.

Fonterra site manager Donald Lumsden said the fire had been in a vacuum pump in the roof space but it had been extinguished.

Crews from New Plymouth, Eltham, Hawera and Stratford were called to the scene just after 12pm, New Plymouth Senior Station Officer Ian Drewery said.

New Plymouth's fire command unit and operational support vehicle also headed to the scene.

A third alarm was activated which is standard practice for a fire in a multi-storey building, he said.

The Taranaki Daily News understands Collingwood St, where the plant is located, was blocked off and staff evacuated.
