Police are warning motorists to beware of icy Taranaki roads following four crashes this morning.

In all the crashes cars have skidded off the road and crashed into a ditch or bank.

New Plymouth Sergeant Bruce Irvine said it was a timely reminder to "watch out for black ice."

At 3.40am emergency services responded to a crash on Mountain Rd, Tariki, where a car skidded off the road and into a ditch.

"No one was taken to hospital," a St John spokesman said.

Just after 7am police fire and ambulance staff attended another similar crash, on Opunake Rd, near Dawson Falls, where a car had skidded off the road and down a bank.

At 7.30am a van slid off the road and into a bank on State Highway 3 near Eltham.

A second crash was then reported in the same area a few minutes later.

The extent of the injuries is unknown at this stage.

There have been several reports of icy roads around the region and police are asking motorists to beware.
