Firefighters from Waitara and New Plymouth spent more than two hours putting out a house fire early this morning.

Senior station officer Ian Drewery said firefighters were called to the scene, on Browne St in Waitara, about 1.18am and found the house smoke-logged.

The blaze developed and the house was soon fully engulfed in flames, he said.

Drewery said firefighters were at the scene until 3.45am.

When the Taranaki Daily News visited today the front half of the home was completely gutted, windows were blown out and the roof had caved in in places.

The scene will be cordoned off by police until fire safety officers arrive to investigate the cause of the fire, Drewery said.

''At night its pretty hard to tell what's gone on.''
