A New Plymouth resident had a rude awakening when she found an uninvited guest in her home this morning.

The girl rang her mother who alerted police, after an intruder was seen inside the family's Frank Wilson Tce house, Welbourn, about 8.30am.

It was unclear if the man realised the girl was at home when he entered the property, Sergeant Bruce Irvine said.

Police are searching the Welbourn area for a short haired man, in his early 20s, who was wearing a dark hoodie and carrying a black bag.
