A truck driver escaped serious injury after hitting a pohutukawa tree in Patea yesterday morning.
Sergeant Andrew Stilton of Hawera police said the driver, believed to be in his early 50s, and his truck appeared to have "glanced off" a north-bound vehicle prior to leaving the road at the southern end of Bedford St.
The truck then struck a tree on the left hand side of the road.
When emergency services arrived at the scene about 10.45am, the car and its driver could not be located.
However, Stilton said the driver had since been in touch with police and will be interviewed as part of the investigation into the crash.
Stilton said the car sustained very minor damage and the driver was not injured.
