Health authorities are warning against an irresponsible rush to buy up the anti-viral medication Tamiflu.

The World Health Organisation yesterday raised its level of influenza pandemic alert from four to five after the swine flu continued its march across the globe.

To date, 33 countries have notified WHO of suspected or confirmed cases.

WHO's highest alert is six.

In New Zealand there were 16 people being treated for swine flu and 104 people with suspected cases, two of whom are in Taranaki. In addition there are 111 cases with flu symptoms who are in isolation and being treated. Many more who are close family contacts are also in isolation.

Taranaki DHB chief pharmacist Elizabeth Plant said yesterday that only genuine patients should be seeking Tamiflu.

"We are asking people to be responsible and follow stringent hygiene practices at this time," she said. "It is important that Tamiflu is used appropriately. There are side- effects and it is important to only use Tamiflu when necessary."

If used irresponsibly too many strains of influenza can become resistant to the anti-viral in the future, said Mrs Plant, who is head of the Pharmaceutical Society of New Zealand. Ms Plant said pharmacists were trained to assess patients who might be seeking Tamiflu.

"They will be carrying out face to face assessments to ensure that the anti-viral is used responsibly."

Until yesterday, Taranaki DHB Medical Officer of Health, Penny Hutchinson, restricted the supply of Tamiflu in the Taranaki region.

However, from today, Tamiflu may be sold over the counter by pharmacists to individuals displaying symptoms of influenza.

Meanwhile, there are still 17 people in Taranaki in isolation, with two suspected cases. Tests are still awaited to see if they have influenza A.
