Two children are in a serious condition in Taranaki Base Hospital's intensive care unit after being hit by a car and flung into the air while walking home from school.
Yesterday a 12-year-old girl and a five-year-old boy were seen trying to cross through traffic near the Awanui St intersection on Mangorei Rd around 4pm when they were hit.
Eyewitness Millie Clegg, 15, said she was walking home from school when she saw the accident.
"The car hit them pretty hard. They went up in in the air," she said.
The children were taken by ambulance to Taranaki Base Hospital for treatment.
Jesiah suffered a broken pelvis and Alex had scalp lacerations.
It is unlikely charges will be laid.
Police would like witnesses to the accident to phone 06 759 5500.
