"It always rains on show day."

That was the prophecy of many regulars yesterday morning as a grey South Taranaki sky threatened to dampen the fun.

Luckily it didn't come true and by lunchtime grey clouds had parted and rays of sunshine shone down on the 126th Egmont A&P Show.

Hundreds of people walked through the gates at the showgrounds in Hawera and into a carnival-like atmosphere.

Many headed straight to familiar sideshows while others went on the hunt for new events.

Of course, there were showjumping events, cattle shows, fencing competitions, small animal farm and enough fun rides to make showgoers queasy after an obligatory hotdog.

The weight transfer tractor pull competition held for the first time at the show proved popular.

More smoke, noise and action from souped-up and standard machines is promised today and the kids didn't miss out on the grunty action with a tractor pull on mini-models causing a commotion outside the Kidszone.

Dog stars kept the crowds pleased with clever dogs performing tricks and the family-based entertainment catered for everyone.

The show parade proceeded through lined streets last night and even Father Christmas made a special, if a tad early, appearance.

Egmont A&P Association president Richard Brewer said one of the highlights for today would be the Kiwi Lumberjack Show.

Members have just returned from a tour of Canada.

"We have to fill up a pool with 7000 litres of water in front of the grandstand for them so it should be pretty interesting," Mr Brewer said.

While it is a show of many firsts, it will be the last for two invaluable show organisers.

Mr Brewer's three-year presidency comes to an end and show secretary Judy Mehrtens is leaving to go to Australia after six years in the position.
