A large shar pei-cross dog is on death row after inflicting serious injuries on another dog.
The dog, called Koro, is likely to be euthanased by the New Plymouth District Council dog rangers in the next few days.
The New Plymouth District Court yesterday was told that Koro was on the loose at the beach at Weld Rd about 11.30am on September 6.
The unregistered shar pei had attacked a ridgeback dog in a serious and unprovoked attack, council officer Murray Clearwater said.
The ridgeback had been taken to Weld Rd for a walk with its New Plymouth owner.
Koro's owner, Lance Wiperi, admitted the attack and said that Koro had carried out a similar attack in the past. He also acknowledged the dog was unregistered.
Judge Allan Roberts told Wiperi he had no choice but to order Koro destroyed. Wiperi was also ordered to pay $74 vet costs and the $250 for the cost of feeding him from the time the dog was impounded following the attack.
Wiperi was also required to pay the council $146.25 as reparation for the non-registration.
