Details about an alleged sexual assault in Hawera on Tuesday night are still sketchy.

Police spokeswoman Kim Perks said police were still working with the "traumatised" victim to piece together details of attack that happened about 10pm at St Joseph's Church car park on Little Regent St.

It is understood the 18-year-old woman was walking home from the supermarket with a female friend on High St.

The victim was approached shortly after the two separated.

Some members of the public have spoken to Hawera police but they would still like to hear from anyone who may have information about the incident.
