A former Taranaki man, James Hill, 21, died after being struck by a car in Westport about 5.40am on Saturday.
He moved to the West Coast about four years ago with his father Colin Hill, who is the publican at the Mohikinui Tavern, north of Westport.
James Hill was walking home from a party when he was hit by a car allegedly driven by a 21-year-old Westport woman who had also been at the party.
Neighbours said they believed there was a fight at the party before the incident.
Detective Duncan Bull, of the Greymouth police, said reports of a fight would be investigated.
However, the death was being treated as a traffic crash.
The woman had been charged with failing to stop to provide assistance and was released on bail. Mr Bull said further charges were likely. Colin Hill said he was in disbelief as the hit-and-run occurred on a wide, empty and well-lit street.
The driver is due to appear in the Westport District Court today.
