Hawera police are stepping up patrols around Hawera High School to stem vandalism.
Sergeant Ivan Smith said smashed bottles and damaged letter boxes and fences were "a continuous minor problem" around the King Edward Park and the high school.
"People shouldn't have to not take kids to the park because there's broken glass around. Nor should they have to continually buy new letterboxes."
Mr Smith requested that any damage be reported to police so they can identify who is responsible.
Mindless vandalism was often the work of intoxicated people at the weekend, he said. The Normanby Playcentre's fences were kicked in at the weekend, causing the centre to be closed for a time on Monday.
If anyone saw any drunken or suspicious behaviour in the surrounding area they can call Mr Smith directly.
He also made an appeal to anyone who saw a slim male with short hair and full facial tattoos near St Joseph's Primary School in Hawera on Monday between 1pm and 2pm.
The man stole a laptop computer while the school was in session.
