Taranaki could be in for a day with the undead if a Facebook zombie fan group gains enough members by Easter.

High school student Felix Griffin, from New Plymouth, is offering to host a Zombie Walk through the town centre, providing he has a few friends who want to do it too.

A zombie walk, according to Felix, is an organised public gathering of people who dress up in zombie costumes.

It usually takes place in an urban centre, where the participants make their way around the city streets to a public space (or a series of taverns in the case of a zombie pub crawl) in a somewhat orderly fashion.

The teen created the online group only a few days ago but already, the walk looks likely to go ahead, with the group boasting more than 50 members as of last night.

Felix, a big zombie film fan, said he hadn't expected anywhere near that amount of interest.

"I thought I'd get five or 10 people," he said.

Despite never taking part in a zombie walk before, Felix thought it would be fun after watching videos of similar events in Wellington and Auckland.

"Some people laughed when they saw it and some were confused. I think most New Plymouth people will have a positive view of it."

He said zombies were very popular right now, but probably not as popular as ninjas.

Felix doesn't have any plans for a ninja walk, however.

"I have walked around the block in a ninja outfit before though. I got a few funny looks."

To participate in the zombie walk, people would need a mask or some good make-up and some ragged clothing, Felix said.

There was a video make-up lesson on the Facebook group site for those needing some help. There were also links to videos of other walks.

At this stage, New Plymouth's walk is planned for some time in the next school holidays.

The group is called "Join if you think New Plymouth should have a zombie walk."
