There was the clash of shield, sword, and spear at Urenui Domain over the weekend as the Taranaki Medieval Society hosted a special training camp.

About 40 enthusiasts and their families from medieval societies and clubs all over the North Island took part in the two-day event.

Wearing European medieval period costumes and armour, the enthusiasts practised infantry formations, archery and "mass combat" over Saturday and yesterday.

Co-organiser Darryl Thomas said the training allowed them to prepare to put on realistic displays for any upcoming shows the various societies may be involved with.

"So when we have to put on a big gig, we've got the people training to do that.

"We find it a celebration of culture. It is more and more becoming a family sort of set-up."

The next camp the society puts on at Urenui will also have horses for jousting practice.
