One year since well-known Taranaki multisport competitor Cameron Clow was killed in Bahrain, a trust set up in his name has received a major boost.
New Plymouth wedding planner Sonya Cole is giving the proceeds of her inaugural Weddings With Heart charity event in September to the Cameron Clow Trust.
The trust has been set up in memory of the popular sportsman to continue his passion for involving children in sports by providing financial assistance to young sportspeople.
The late Mr Clow's fiance, Kate Morgan, said the trust would take its first funding applications from late July through to September with the first round of grants made in late September.
"It's for all ages and not just for elite athletes like Cameron. It could be for the boy at Highlands who wants to play rugby but can't afford the boots, to the top-level competitor who needs help paying for the event entry fees," Miss Morgan said.
Various events have already been held for the trust including a funwalk, golf match and one that had the New Plymouth District Council staff wearing blue clothes, Mr Clow's favourite colour.
The Weddings With Heart event is a copy of a US non-profit Get Hitched With Hope which raises money for breast cancer patients through auctions of wedding goods and services.
Ms Cole said she chose the Cameron Clow Trust because she wanted the money raised from the New Plymouth event to stay in Taranaki and benefit its young people.
Her September party was aimed at couples intending to marry as most prizes and auction items would be wedding-related.
Application forms for funding from the Cameron Clow Trust will be available from late July at www.cameronclowtrust.co.nz
