Inglewood police are calling for the driver of a white sedan to come forward after fleeing the scene of a crash on Tuesday night.

Constable Darren Hayes said the incident, which happened about 5.30pm on State Highway 3 at the Lepper Rd junction, could have been much worse.

In dark, wet conditions the white sedan pulled out of Lepper Rd Lower, causing two cars heading towards Inglewood to brake hard.

The first car managed to stop but the second, in trying to avoid them, slid on the road, struck the roadside bank and then bounced back into traffic, hitting the rear of the first car.

"The white sedan has just carried on and hasn't stopped," Mr Hayes said.

There were no injuries reported although a woman in the second car was taken by ambulance to Taranaki Base Hospital to check out her sore back.

Mr Hayes said police would like the sedan driver to come forward and would like to hear from any others who may have a better description of the vehicle.

"Very lucky there wasn't a serious injury at that stage of night on that stretch of road."
