Surf groms show way for Taranaki
Taranaki surfers took out the under-12 division of the Rip Curl GromSearch contested at Fitzroy Beach over the weekend.
Tom Butland and Ariana Shewry, both from Oakura, were crowned champs after Sunday's finals.
Butland posted the highest heat score with 15 out of the maximum 20 points to advance to the final, while Shewry beat out three others, including two other competitors from Taranaki, to win the girls division.
Conditions out on the water at Fitzroy Beach had improved by Sunday for the first in a series of events planned as part of the New Zealand Home Loans Surf Festival which runs until April 6.
Surfing Taranaki chief executive Craig Williamson said the success of the youngsters was pleasing.
"It bodes well for the future," he said.
Taranaki hopeful Daniel Farr missed out on top spot in the under-17 boys division. Dextar Muskens, from New South Wales, placed first but Mt Maunganui's Kehu Butler came in second and as a result secured one of the spots to represent New Zealand at the international Rip Curl GromSearch final which will held at Maresias Beach in Sao Paulo, Brazil in April.
Butler will be joined by Raiha Ensor, also from Mt Maunganui, who placed second in the under 17 girls division behind Australian Paris Whittaker.
