Waitara's Ralph Bennett, centre, got to experience laying his hands on New Zealand rugby's greatest prize at long last yesterday.

In 1949, Bennett played halfback for Buller when the South Islanders went agonisingly close to claiming the Log o' Wood, drawing 6-6 with Otago.

Yesterday, at Taranaki Base Hospital, Bennett was thrilled when Ferdie and Taranaki great Peter Burke, right, toured the shield through Ward 5.
