Bride of beer rises on Aussie TV
Taranaki bride of the beer Katrina Hayman's star continues to rise with the ale lover to appear on Australia's No1 breakfast TV show today.
Mrs Hayman's television interview on Channel Seven's Sunrise show comes two weeks after the now infamous picture of her drinking a beer at the Taranaki Bride of the Year competition was printed in this paper.
The picture outraged event organisers who demanded an apology and polarised readers across the province and the world with the picture causing headlines as far away as England, Canada, USA and India.
This morning that controversy moves to Australia via Sunrise.
"I'm a little bit nervous but excited as well. There will be a lot of people watching," Mrs Hayman said.
The Hawera farm worker goes into the show armed with experience from numerous newspaper interviews, two radio spots on The Rock and two weeks of being Taranaki's most talked about woman. While some of that talk has been centred on the inappropriateness of the photo, much of it has been in support of Mrs Hayman and a woman's right to drink what she wants.
"Since the photo I've had a lot of females tell me how much they like to drink beer," she said. "There will always be people that will recognise me from the photo and I have a new nickname – Beer Bride – but it's been a great experience and I am still me."
Sunrise is not broadcast in New Zealand but today's episode can be viewed at au.tv.yahoo.com/sunrise/video/
