An 80-year-old man is dead after a crash between a molasses tanker and car on SH3A, north of New Plymouth.
Emergency services were called to the scene near the intersection of SH3A and Te Arei Rd about 1.15pm.
St John operations manager Ian May said the man was treated by paramedics but died on the way to hospital.
Sergeant Stephen Richardson said it appeared the car pulled out into the path of the tanker unit.
The tanker's trailer came off and ended up blocking the road.
Serious Crash Unit are investigating.
