After a five-year battle with cancer, Oriana McLeod has died at her home.

The wife of popular New Plymouth District councillor John McLeod died yesterday surrounded by friends and family.

Oriana was well known around Taranaki for her involvement with Tukapa Rugby Club and from her time employed at Work and Income.

"She was my wife, my best friend, my lover, my confidant. She was always my backstop. She was much loved by all her whanau and family," Mr McLeod said.

Mr McLeod said he would travel with his wife's body to Porangahau Marae, south of Waipukurau in the Hawke's Bay, this morning and a service would be held on Saturday.

New Plymouth Mayor Harry Duynhoven said the council had joined him in extending their sympathy to Mr McLeod and his family.

"It's certainly come a lot sooner than we expected."

Mr Duynhoven said there would be a council presence at the tangi.

Oriana is survived by her husband, three children, Hunter, Michael and Morgan, and grandson baby Connor.

Will Aaron Cruden's omission hurt or help the All Blacks?

Hurt - he needs as much game time as possible.

Help - finally Beauden Barrett will get a proper run.

Hmmm - no biggie, just a temporary hitch.

Who is Cruden? I support the All Whites.
