A last minute try to captain Jason Eaton secured Taranaki a bonus
point win over Bay of Plenty in their NPC opening match at Mount
Maunganui today.

The 37-22 win also put Taranaki on top of the premier table after
Auckland, and Wellington failed to cross the line four times.

The match was an open affiar, with both sides looking to use the ball
as much as they could.

Taranaki held a 20-8 lead at halftime after tries from James Broadhust
and a spectacular solo effort from wing Waisake Naholo.

The second half also started well for the visitors after Beauden
Barrett grabbed a 70m intercept try.

Bay Of Plenty narrowed the margin to 27-15 but could not hold off
Taranaki when Eaton crashed over virtually in the last play of the
match.

The win could have come at a cost to Taranaki, however, with fulback
Andre Taylor leaving the field early in the match with a suspected
broken thumb.

TARANAKI 37 (Waisake Naholo, James Broadhurst, Beauden Barrett, Jason
Eaton tries; Barrett 4 cons, 3 pens) BAY OF PLENTY 22 (Culum
Retallick, Nick McCashin, Lelia Masaga tries; Kenny Lynn pen,
McClashin 2 cons). HT: 20-8.
