Firefighters were called after flames began leaping from under a car's bonnet on New Plymouth's Carrington St this morning.
The car fire, near the intersection with Pendarves St, was reported at 11.45am.
A neighbour, dressed in a bathrobe, attempted to put out the blaze with an extiguisher before firefighters arrived but was unsuccessful.
After firefighters extinguished the blaze an inspection of the vehicle, to establish the cause, began.
