A diesel spill on State Highway Three stretching from Waitara to Mt Messenger caused difficulties for trucks today.

Waitara constable Aaron Peters said the diesel spill, which was phoned in about 8am this morning, caused a backlog of trucks on Mt Messenger.

"Several trucks weren't able to get up, so the road was blocked," he said.

"We stopped southbound traffic at the top of the hill so trucks could use the whole road to get up."

Mr Peters said the spill also contributed to a crash in the Uruti Valley in which a car trailer slid into stock on the side of the road.

"There were a few corners that were quite bad."

The spill has come from a truck, but inquires into which truck and who owns it are continuing, Mr Peters said.

Road workers were called out to put sand on the spills and traffic is flowing as normal.

Anyone with information should contact the Waitara police, Mr Peters said.
