A Bell Block school principal remains in hospital after crashing down a 20-metre bank on his bike.
Puketapu School principal Mike Johnson was thrown over his bike's handlebars and down the Wills Rd bank on Monday afternoon while following a group of pupils on a cross-country run.
Pupils rang 111 and comforted Mr Johnson until emergency services arrived.
Firefighters, St John paramedics and police were able to carry Mr Johnson up the bank to a waiting ambulance and he was taken to Taranaki Base Hospital.
Mr Johnson was reported to be in a stable condition in hospital.
Acting principal Mary Barron confirmed Mr Johnson remained in hospital.
"He did hurt himself in his neck and back area," Mrs Barron said.
A school assembly had been held to let staff and pupils know Mr Johnson was going to be all right, she said.
"He's going to be fine. He's got good movement."
Mrs Barron said the pupils who were with Mr Johnson and went to his aid were amazing.
"He was very proud of the ones who had worked down at the bank," she said.
"He was very well looked after."
Mrs Barron said the school had been in contact with Mr Johnson's family.
