A Taranaki man in his mid-20s suffered serious injuries after rolling his car in the early hours this morning.
Emergency services were alerted to the car in Richmond Rd, in Lepperton, north of New Plymouth, around 6am.
It is unclear how long the man had been trapped before being found, but it is thought he may have been waiting for some time before being found, Constable Robert Schaare said.
"The vehicle was cold when the person who found him phoned in [the event]. A passing member of the public alerted emergency services."
The man was to be the only person in the car. He had to be cut free by firefighters.
An ambulance spokewoman said the man was transported to hospital in a critical condition
