Four inflatable rescue boats (IRB) were called out today after a fishing boat's motor cut out 100m offshore from Hobson St about 2pm.
Acting sergeant Andrew Stilton said the alarm was raised by a member of the public after they spotted someone on the boat calling for help.
"They were walking along and saw someone on the boat was waving an oar in the air for help," he said.
"When I got here, they clearly didn't have the boat under control so we called out the IRBs."
Within minutes of the rescue boats' arrival the stranded vessel was up and running again.
