A Taranaki Daily News contractor was taken for a ride early on Friday morning when the truck he was in rolled away and crashed into a fence.
After backing a distribution truck into the loading bay Graham Bennett pulled the hand break up, but not enough.
A short time later the van rolled onto the road, with Mr Bennett in the back, and into a parking meter and fence on Courtenay St, near The Mill.
"It's something I wouldn't like to happen again," Mr Bennett said.
"One of the guys said my face was as white as the truck."
Mr Bennett was not injured in the crash.
"It's lucky it hit the fence and didn't go over the edge," he said.
Taranaki Daily News general manager Mike Brewer said a health and safety investigation was carried out after the crash.
"It was part human error and part the quirks of the truck," he said.
Mr Brewer said the truck was trip-tonic and did not have a park gear.
"I had a look in it myself and it's only got reverse, drive and neutral."
