Teen pleads guilty to murder
Thirteen-year-old Jordan Nelson has pleaded guilty to murdering his 50-year-old caregiver, Rosemaree Kurth, in a shooting in rural North Taranaki earlier this year.
In the High Court at New Plymouth today, Nelson, had name suppression lifted by Justice Timothy Brewer, after he changed his plea to guilty.
Both Nelson's and Ms Kurth's identities have been suppressed until today.
Nelson had previously pleaded not guilty and a murder trial had been due to start this month.
New Plymouth police and emergency services were called to the murder scene, a house on Piko Rd, Okoki, about 12km inland from Urenui, soon after 3.30pm on April 15 and found Ms Kurth shot dead.
Police found Nelson driving a white Ford Telstar in Waitara about 15 minutes later.
Nelson is one of New Zealand's youngest killers.
The youngest convicted killer is Bailey Junior Kurariki, who was just 12 when he was involved in the death of pizza delivery man Michael Choy in 2001.
Justice Brewer remanded Nelson in custody until December 20 for sentencing.
