Stratford checkout operator Mandy Kaur has become the lower North Island Foodstuffs Checker of the Year.

Ms Kaur took first prize from nine other finalists during a staff training awards ceremony on November 17.

Stratford New World co-owner Craig Waite said the store's staff and management were not surprised one of their checkout operators won against the best from around the lower North Island.

''Mandy is a great asset to us here at Stratford New World and we are pleased to have her as part of our team. She is very popular amongst all our staff as well as our customers,'' he said.

''She is a lovely, genuine person.''

The event, held at Wellington's TSB Bank Arena, celebrated the achievements of graduates from industry-related courses and presented special awards to those who stood out for their excellence in work and study.

Yes - there's no faulting their commitment.

Mostly, but they are under-resourced.

Sort of - depends on when and where.

Not really - clearly a low priority for them.

Absolutely not.

Not sure - luckily I've never been burgled.
