A man who tried to abduct a girl outside New Plymouth Girls' High School last week is being sought by police.

New Plymouth CIB is calling for witnesses to the incident, which occurred outside New Plymouth Girls High School, on Mangorei Rd close to the Northgate intersection between 1pm and 2.30pm last Friday.

The man is described as a male in his 40s or 50s with grey stubble. He was wearing a hoodie over his head.

The girl was walking on the footpath towards the intersection when a black car stopped beside her, police said.

The driver called out to her through the window before he got out of the car and crossed on to the footpath towards her.

Another car slowed down and that driver called out to check on the girl, who then ran into the school.

Anyone with information can contact Detective Mike Aro at New Plymouth Police Station on 759 5500.
