Second suspicious car fire

Police are investigating a second suspicious car fire after a partially-burnt Peugeot was discovered at Back Beach this afternoon.

Firefighters were called to the scene at the bottom car park, off Centennial Dr, about 2.30pm, Station Officer Keith Murphy said.

"It (the fire) was out on arrival. We spent most of our time liaising with police and carrying out our own investigations," Mr Murphy said.

"We aren't sure of the cause, but there are definitely some peculiarities. It's being treated as suspicious."

At 2am this morning firefighters were called to an arson attack on a Nissan Cefiro parked on Simons St, Moturoa.

Senior Station Officer Maurice Kemsley said the car was burnt out by the blaze.

"It was fully involved when we got there," he said.

"It appears someone broke into the car, it was an arson attack."

Mr Kemsley said the car hadn't been driven since Wednesday afternoon.

The doors of the car were open and the windows were smashed out, Mr Kemsley said.

"We don't know if they were smashed or blown out by the fire."

Firefighters spent about 20 minutes putting the fire out and another half an hour cooling the hot spots.

Mr Murphy said there weren't any clear links between the two fires but both were being investigated by police.
