The man killed in a two-car crash in Ngaere last night was well-known Eltham stalwart Don Drabble.

The 83-year-old died after he pulled out of Cornwall Rd on to State Highway 3 and collided with a northbound vehicle about 6pm last night.

Mr Drabble was awarded a Local Heroes medal on Tuesday night for his contribution to the Eltham community throughout his 83 years.

He was also known as the ''Father of the Town Hall'' after he spent countless hours restoring the building.

Mr Drabble was a stalwart of the Eltham District Historical Society for decades, wrote a book about Chew Chong, and was a life member of the Eltham Savage Club and Eltham Lions.

St John's Ambulance staff worked on Mr Drabble for a short time, however, he died at the scene.

The 51-year-old driver of the other vehicle was taken to Taranaki Base Hospital with minor injuries.

What do you think of Maori trying to restrict access to the breakwater?

It's a ridiculous move and won't help.

Good on them for standing up for themselves.

It's a non-issue since they can't fully cut off access.

Don't know, don't care
