LATEST: A tractor stolen on Saturday from a Hawera service centre and taken on a 17-kilometre joyride has been found.
The tractor was taken from the CLAAS Harvest Centre about 2pm and was seen being driven around Pitt St, Normanby, and then briefly parked outside a Waihi Rd address.
Police found the distinctive green tractor hidden behind the old Kapuni schoolhouse yesterday.
Owner, Hawera contractor Paul Kalin said he was "pretty pleased" to hear it had been found and was largely undamaged.
He said the culprit must have had previous tractor-driving experience.
"Otherwise, they wouldn't have got the thing out of the yard," Mr Kalin said.
Constable Dylan Robinson said forensic officers would be working on the tractor during the next couple of days.
"The investigation continues in the hope of locating evidence that will lead to the apprehension and prosecution of the offender," Mr Robinson said.
