A Highlands Intermediate student can claim the naming rights on the school's newest building.

Staff, students and dignitaries gathered for a blessing and official opening of the school's multi-purpose building.

Named "The Hub", it was year 7 student Blair Lawrence who won a school competition to come up with the title.

In his bid he said the name was fitting because the building would be a central point to meet for different activities and sports.

"I think it should be called The Hub because you can do a lot of things in there and all together in one building instead of just one thing," he wrote.

Highlands Intermediate principal Eric Shaw said about 100 students put in applications to name the building.

"The Hub is very fitting because the building is all about pulling people together," he said.

The school's board of trustees chairman David Fletcher said a full gymnasium at the school was discussed years ago but exceeded the budget.

"Today is a result of years of work by many people," Mr Fletcher said.

The multi-purpose building is designed to be used as a gym, classroom space, activity room and wet-weather area.
