Toko fire chief Trevor Dent's face was as red as his fire engine after he had to call the brigade to a fire at his own farm.

The acting chief fire officer, who promotes the Firewise School Programme in a little red Morris Minor fire truck, said he now had quite a bit of humble pie to eat.

He called his colleagues to the back of his property about 5pm on Monday when a controlled burn off ignited a stand of old man pine trees.

He said there wasn't much danger to the surrounding area but called it in to be safe.

"We had a 100 per cent attendance that night.

"The right people were on call and I was able to evaluate their skills."

Mr Dent said the merciless teasing hadn't left too many scars but he was surprised Victim Support hadn't been around to see him.

"There was a lot of laughter," he said.

The Taranaki Daily News understands the firefighters even let Mr Dent drive the fire truck back to the station - then refuel it and give it a bit of a clean.

Should NPDC sell its Tasman farms?

Yes, and use the money for local projects.

No, the farms are a good long-term investment.

Sell a portion of them.
