Crash driver nabbed for attacking helpers
"Arrested for assaulting police."
A suspected drunk driver who spun off a section of Mawhitiwhiti Rd, near Normanby, rewarded his rescuers by lashing out at them yesterday.
Detective Guy Jackson said the "drunk and abusive driver" attacked him and a number of police officers after he threatened people who came to his assistance.
"He's been arrested for threatening behaviour and assaulting police."
More charges would follow, he said.
"It took three of us to get him into a police car."
Mr Jackson said it appeared excessive speed coupled with alcohol led to the crash, at about 5.20pm, and the driver had over-corrected after a bend. The car came to rest in a empty field.
