A New Plymouth army private accused of raping a female soldier has been acquitted by a jury in Palmerston North District Court.

The Crown had alleged Devon Dwayne Fraser, 21, raped the woman after a St Patrick's Day binge.

On March 18 last year, Mr Fraser and a female soldier were seen "making out and hooking up" in the High Flyers nightclub. They returned to Linton where they had sex.

In his closing remarks to the jury, defence lawyer Fergus Steedman said it was consensual, but the Crown accused Mr Fraser of raping the female soldier, who, it said, did not give consent.

Judge Les Atkins reminded the jury that when a drunk person gave consent, it still stood.

Will Aaron Cruden's omission hurt or help the All Blacks?

Hurt - he needs as much game time as possible.

Help - finally Beauden Barrett will get a proper run.

Hmmm - no biggie, just a temporary hitch.

Who is Cruden? I support the All Whites.
