The search is on through Taranaki's coastal back roads after a speeding motorcyclist eluded arrest half-an-hour ago.
The biker is believed to be a woman riding an older model dark blue Ducati.
Pursuing police patrol was told to pull out of the chase on Wiremu Rd near Oxford Rd after the bike reached excessively high speeds.
Sergeant Stephen Richardson said the bike was first seen by police travelling at speed near Tataraimaka on State Highway 45.
A pursuit was started when police caught up with the bike.
But the police were stood down after excessive speeds - believed to be more than 170kmh - were reached.
''The rider wasn't interested in stopping and police abandoned the chase because of safety concerns and such horrendous speeds causing a huge risk to others,'' Mr Richardson said.
The selfish actions put at risk school buses and farmers in the area who had the right to travel safely on the roads, he said.
Anyone who had any information about the rider should contact New Plymouth police as soon as possible, Mr Richardson said.
Police are searching Puniho, Carrington, Oxford and Wiremu roads and surrounding areas.
"We would like to hear from a lady riding a dark blue older model blue Ducati seen in the Puniho Rd area" Mr Richardson said.
